Today the children had a fantastic trip to the Eden Project. They explored the Rainforest Biome and enjoyed experiencing the different habitat. We had a workshop that was titled 'Ready, Steady, Sow' and the children learnt about what a plant needs to grow successfully. After this they were able to plant their own seeds ready to be taken home and planted in their own gardens.
The day at Eden was fantastic and it was great to be able to visit this wonderful location attraction.

Duckpool outdid themselves this year - the World Book Day costumes that they attended in were fabulous! Thank you so much to parents and carers for supporting the students on this exciting day: arranging and sourcing costumes.
We love reading at Brunel and jump at the chance to promote it. Throughout the day the children took part in a range of exciting and fun activities including a character hunt, mixed year group story time (in which all members of staff read to groups of children), online Live Lessons and an online illustration crash course held by Cressida Cowell - author of our current class story 'How to Train Your Dragon'. The children did a fantastic job of drawing Toothless the dragon!

Number Day 2026
Number Day is a national, annual event hosted and arranged by the NSPCC. The aim is to raise awareness of the work of the NSPCC, Childline and the importance of numeracy.

Live Lesson
The children took part in an online Live Lesson. They were introduced to 'Magic Squares' and the maths behind these.

Competition Time
Children were taught a game based upon Magic Squares. They challenged their learning buddy to a tournament.

Serious Side
We certainly had fun playing with numbers and learning how important numbers can be. We finished the day by reminding ourselves of a vital number to children in need of support: Childline 08001111.
Welcome back after Half Term - we hope that you had some lovely family time and a chance to relax and chill; ready for new, exciting learning in Spring 2.
Our new History unit is based upon the Vikings. This week we have begun by learning at where they fit chronologically within history. The children worked in groups to order historical events, in and around the time of the Vikings, on a timeline.
Our new science topic is 'Changing Materials'. We started by considering changes of state. The children were set a conundrum: if they were to find two unlabelled bottles of water on a desert island (one sea water, one fresh water), how could they find out which was which? They successfully came up with a solution to the problem and identified that bottle A was sea water, as indicated by the salt crystals left behind after evaporation. Nothing will stop our class if they find themselves stranded in the middle of nowhere!
This week in Science, Duckpool have been learning how electrical switches work. They also then investigated how to create their own switch using a range of given items - they could choose from things like cardboard, brass split pins, paperclips, straws and pencils.
There were some great successes and they found it very satisfying to design and create their own circuits and circuit components.
Ahoy there
me hearties! We have had a week of Pirate fun in pre-school this week.
The
children thoroughly enjoyed this week's activities discovering all about
pirates, decorating treasure chests, Pirate dancing, Treasure Chest Tuff tray
and even finding out what our own Pirate names would be.
We enjoyed watching some videos of Ocean life and talked about all of the different types of sea creatures and fish that live deep down below the waves. The children were amazed at some of the amazing colours and differences of fish that there are!
As well as
all this we enjoyed some lovely play and exploring time outside, our big pirate
flag has inspired the children to use the climbing frame as their own pirate
ship, with lots of the children made to walk the plank! All good fun whilst
also giving plenty of opportunity to build those gross motor skills and confidence
in climbing and moving around the equipment.
Another
activity the children enjoyed was our bubble shape art. We mixed washing up liquid into our paint and
using the shape cutters we practiced the names of the shapes as we made bubbles
on to the paper. The children loved
popping the bubbles that appeared.
Next week
we will continue with some more pirate fun and introduce some Mermaid stories
and activities too.
We hope
everyone enjoys the glorious spring sunshine.

This week
in pre-school we have been discovering rock pools and all the wonderful sea
life we may discover in them!
Our
rockpool tuff tray set up was hugely popular with the children and gave them a
good immersive experience of how the animals may hide under rocks or seaweed.
The children were able to understand that if we were to go rock pooling on a
beach, we must be very careful whilst exploring, and that it is important to
not disturb the creatures in their homes.
We took our
playdoh play to another level with lots of shells, google eyes, pipe cleaners, gemstones
and sea creature shapes to expand our experimenting to make our own sea
creatures.
The
children have all shown tremendous teamwork to help us tidy up our playground area
with lots of sweeping and scrubbing with bubbly water. We were then able to
enjoy some ocean themed water play and practice our scooping and pouring skills
with the water play area.
We even
gave our box of shells a good clean using scrubbing brushes.
During our
phonics this week we have also been discovering Jungle Animals - our activities
including recognising and naming the animal sounds, using instruments to move
like the animals, and listening to the first letter sounds.
Lastly, the
children were busy creating a special card for Mother's Day and we hope that
all our lovely pre-school mums have a special day on Sunday.

Pre-School Team.
