Year 2 & 3 Weekly Learning Update

Welcome back! We hope you all had a lovely Easter break. It has been wonderful to see the children return to school so positively-they have settled back into routines brilliantly and have been eager to get started with their new learning.

Topic - "Why is our world wonderful?"

We launched our new topic with a fun and engaging "wow starter". The children worked together to create a gallery showcasing both physical and human features of the Earth. They also wrote interesting facts about the different oceans, demonstrating great curiosity and teamwork.

English

In English, we have begun our new genre: descriptive settings. The children explored what they already know and identified key features of this type of writing. We also started to look at adverbials of time and subordination, helping us to build more detailed and interesting sentences.

Maths

In maths, both year groups have been busy developing new skills:

  • Year 3 have started learning about length and perimeter, measuring and comparing different objects.
  • Year 2 have been working on multiplying and dividing by 2, as well as practising doubling and halving.

PSHE

We began our new PSHE topic, Relationships, by discussing roles and responsibilities both at home and in different jobs. The children shared some thoughtful ideas and made great links to their own experiences.

RE

In RE, we started our new unit: "What do Christians learn from the creation story?" The children worked collaboratively to explore and represent different parts of the Genesis creation narrative, thinking about what Christians believe about how the world was made.

Art

In art, the children revisited and showcased the skills they developed last term in observational drawing. They practised sketching shape, adding tone through shading, experimenting with cross-hatching, and using mark making to create patterns. It was fantastic to see their growing confidence and attention to detail.

PE

In PE, we started our athletics unit, focusing on how to sprint effectively. The children showed great energy and determination as they practised their running technique.

These are just some of the highlights from a busy and productive first week back. It's been lovely to see such enthusiasm for learning across the class-we're excited for the term ahead!

Summer Term

I hope everyone had a lovely Easter Holiday and enjoyed some of the lovely sunshine.

We have had a busy first week back with many learning opportunties.

In English, we have continued with our unit on persuasive writing. We are creating a leaflet for a space hotel. This week has mostly been focusing on different sentence types and a varied use of vocabulary to include.

In Maths, we have been focusing on time. We have reminded ourselves about the different measurements and converting between seconds, minutes and hours. Then we looked at timetables, converting between analogue and digital and solving word problems. Please practise telling the time at home as it is an important life skill.

In science, we continued our learning on properties of materials. We conducted an investigation to see which substances dissolved in water. We discussed the difference between dissolving an suspension by looking at what happens to the particles in the solutions. The children were amazed by adding oil to the water and watching it separate on the top. They learned a new word - hydrophobic.

I have attached the new learning journey below.

Enjoy the weekend.

March

We have had a busy March, preparing for Easter. The children enjoyed following visual instructions to help them create their Easter cards.

This term we have endeavoured to get outside as much as we could. We had a few outings during March. We have explored the local parks, both in Calstock and St Annes Chapel. The ARC children also got to visit a farm, where we saw chickens, sheep, lambs, piygmy goats and ponies.

As our term came to a close we finished off by making Chocolate Easter nests.

We wish everyone a Happy Easter and look forward to seeing everyone back for the Summer Term.

March 2026

This month we have been learning about ancient Maya. Our history question was; 'How did the achievements of the ancient Maya impact their society and beyond?' The children asked and answered questions about the past and evaluated the reliability of their evidence to discover more about this period in history. They uncovered where the ancient Maya period came in our history timeline and then who the ancient Maya people were, where their homelands where and how their discoveries and inventions impacted our world today.

In Literacy this month we have been studying the story 'Escape from Pompeii'. We read the story as a class and our focus was on characterising speech. The children completed lots of SPaG work, particularly focusing on expanded noun phrases, direct speech, short sentences for effect and participle phrases. They then wrote a short introduction to their speech paragraphs followed by their speech which they edited and amended using provided success criteria.

In Maths we completed lots of work on fractions. The children also spent lots of time working on their multiplications. We have been using Times Table Rockstars to help increase our recall of times table facts along whilst also following the NCETM Mastering Number at Key Stage Two program.

In Science this month we completed our electricity unit. The children spent lots of time investigating circuits in their unit of learning and looking at renewable and non-renewable sources and electrical safety. This tied in well with our DT unit which saw us exploring, designing and making torches using circuits to create the working light. We also designed and made our own switches for the torches.

Art this month involved us looking at various different sculpture artists and using a range of different materials to then make our own sculptures. First, we made soap sculptures, then wire sculptures and finally carboard shadow sculptures. We enjoyed exploring different materials and using different techniques to create these sculptures.

In RE we were lucky enough to take part in re-enacting two of the events of Holy Week, which we had been learning about, with the 'Open the Book' team.

Week Ending Friday 27th March 2026

Pelynt Primary Academy  |  PreSchool

This week we have continued our Pirate adventures as the children have had such fun with this topic.  We also introduced some Mermaid stories and artwork.

We have also been discussing our Spring changes and what we have been doing seeing outside as the weather begins to warm up.  Some of our children are lucky enough to live on farms and have shared with us the excitement of having baby lambs being born!

With the school field drying up nicely we were able to enjoy lots of running and exploring outside, the children noticed lots of buds appearing on the trees and birds singing as we stood quietly to listen.

Next week is our final week before the Easter break, we will enjoy some Easter themed activities and the Easter service over in church on Wednesday afternoon.

A reminder that School and Pre-school finish at 1.15pm on Thursday 2nd April.

Spring 2

Cornwall Museum
We have had an incredibly busy and enriching time recently, filled with hands-on experiences and learning opportunities. One of the highlights was our trip to Cornwall Museum, where we explored ancient Egyptian artefacts. The children were amazed to see a real mummy! This sparked thoughtful discussions about the ethics of displaying human remains in museums. The children shared their opinions respectfully, considering questions such as whether it is right to display mummies and how we can learn from the past while showing respect. During the visit, the children also took part in a workshop where they learned about the process of mummification. They discovered the different steps involved and even had a chance to try out a simulated version themselves! It was a fantastic way to bring history to life.

Back in school, the children have been busy collecting their knowledge and are now working hard to present their learning in a double-page spread. These include detailed explanations, diagrams, and beautiful illustrations to showcase everything they have discovered.

Life skills workshop
On Thursday, Year 5/6 also attended a Life Skills Workshop. They spent they morning with visitors from the police, fire service, GWR, and other organisations. The children learned important skills such as CPR and how to keep themselves safe in a variety of situations, including around roads, railways, and in emergencies. We are very proud of how engaged and responsible the children have been throughout these experiences. Photos from both events will be on Showbie.

Have a lovely weekend,
Mr T and Mrs W
