This week we have been writing our sonnets in English based on cats after midnight. We used Shakespeare's Sonnet 18 for inspiration and the children have enjoyed using archaic language.
In maths, we have been learning about metric measures and how to convert between them. We have been using our knowledge of how to multiply and divide by 10,100 and 1000 to help us.
In science, we conducted an experiment to find out what the best material for a phone screen is. The children tested a range of materials to see if they conducted electricity, if they were magnetic and if they were transparent. We discovered that the marble was the best material even though it doesn't conduct electricity because it was not magnetic but it was transparent. Through research, we found out that the glass used in phone screens has a special layer of metal called indium tin oxide added to it which enables it to conduct electricity from our fingertips to the phone. This is what makes it work and why we cannot wear gloves when using the phone.
Have a great weekend!

A busy week of celebrations, with both St Piran's Day and world Book Day in the same week (and the same day!).
The children have all enjoyed the experience of making their own traditional Cornish pasty this week. They helped to chop potatoes, roll their pastry and then fill it with the traditional ingredients, before trying their best to crimp the crust.
We listen to facts about why Cornish pasties are so special and how the miners used to eat them whilst underground mining for tin!
The children also all helped to complete a class Kernow flag which is proudly displayed in our window.
World Book Day seen some fantastic dressing up of favourite characters, and lots of stories were shared.

This week the children in Foundation and Key Stage One have been making their clay fish with the help of Peter and Gwen. These wonderful fish are due to be part of a community project and they will be added to a whole collection of fish that have been made by children and members of the Looe Community.

We have had a wonderful day dressed as our favourite story book characters and it has been great to celebrate World Book Day as a whole school. Everyone looked amazing and it was great to see such a wide variety of characters. We had dinosaurs, dragons, Matilda, Harry Potter, Spiderman and many more. See which famous story characters you can spot in our class photo.

Our new focus story is 'Polar Bear, Polar Bear, what do you hear?'
We have been listening to the story together and talking about the different animals and their different 'voices'.
We have also found the story online and a song about it too.
Can your child tell you the story?
We have been using our ears to listen to the sounds that we hear around school or in the garden.
Science
We are investigating States of Matter to find out how liquids, solids and gases behave when heated and cooled. The children have explored how the particles bond in each state of matter and are now exploring what happens when you cool liquids. They have prepared a range of liquids to compare and will carry out fair tests and observations over time to find out how and what changes occur.
Pictures of their experiments are on Showbie.
Writing
We have now completed our instruction and report writing, trialling story mapping as a planning tool. The children have enjoyed the combination of drawing and writing to plan their own versions and have overwhelmingly asked to use this approach again in their next piece of work.
Swimming
Lessons have started well, with enthusiasm and resilience plentiful. The intention is for the children to gain confidence and skills to allow them to fully enjoy the sailing and water sports in summer term.
Events
Next week, we have our Mother's Day assembly and in the following week some of the children will take part in a Bridge School Music event at St Martin's on Monday 16th and we will all travel to Truro for an Egyptian workshop at Cornwall Museum on Tuesday 17th.
Have a lovely weekend,
Mr T and Mrs W
Our first
week back after half term has flown by and we can't quite believe that we are
already in Spring Term 2!
We are very
excited about our new enquiry question' 'What do we know about where we live?' We will be discovering all about what makes
Cornwall so special, from beaches, rockpools, sea creatures, pasties and even
some tales of Pirates and Mermaids!
Alongside that we will look at some of our seasonal changes as we
transition into Spring. There is always
so much to observe outside as we move into the warmer weather, and the children
have already spotted lots of daffodils popping up around our garden area. With some glimmers of sunshine this week we
have enjoyed some long-awaited dry play and explore time in our outside area.
Our first
week back has seen us enjoy the story 'Duffy's Lucky Escape'. This book was
written by a local author, Ellie Jackson, and helped the children to understand
why it is important to keep our beautiful Cornish beaches clean to help protect
the sea life.
We had our
own beach clean activity tray set up where the children have been finding all
the rubbish that does not belong on the beach.
Alongside
this the children have been serving lots of delicious ice-creams from our Beach
Cafe role play area and creating some Ocean themed play doh scenes. We also
made our own sand castle artwork with sand and glue, then sticking pictures of
shells on to decorate them.
In music
with Mrs Butlin this week we enjoyed exploring the Djembie African Drum,
following along as Mrs Butlin changed the volume, tempo and rhythm that she
played.
Our listening
skills were also extended during our phonics as we explored symbols, the
children did so well to correctly clap out one, two or three symbols depending
on the words we gave them.
A very busy
but enjoyable first week back.
A reminder
that next Thursday 5th March is both St Piran's Day and World Book
Day. We are happy for the children to
choose what celebration they would like to dress up for.

Pre-School Team.
