Straw house

Brunel Primary and Nursery Academy  |  Issys Nursery

This week we have been exploring the properties of straw!

Some of the older children have found that it was really bendy and not very strong; they weren't sure how the first little pig was able to build a house with it, and they weren't surprised that the wolf was able to blow it down.

Other younger children enjoyed playing with it as a sensory experience; watching as it fell and moved with the air (the big bad wolf blowing!).

Copper valley Junior Academy  |  Year 4

January 2026

This month we have been looking at 'How Children's Lives Have Changed' in History. We looked at life for children during the Victorian and Tudor times. We enjoyed learning about how different our lives are compared to that of children in the past. We used a range of different primary and secondary sources to complete our research and practiced evaluating the reliability of our evidence.

In Literacy this month we have been studying the story 'Gregory Cool'. We read the story as a class whilst completing VIPER activities and using our Fab Four characters to investigate the story in more detail. We were focused on the genre 'Stories from another culture' whilst also learning how to create a really effective setting description for a story. We completed lots of SPaG work, particularly focusing on expanded noun phrases, adverbials of place, figurative language and fronted adverbials before eventually planning, writing and editing our very own sequel to the story. We have also studied Kenning poems and created some or our own.

In Maths we completed lots of work on multiplication and division. We spent time using various different written methods to help us complete the given calculations. We also continued our Mastering Number at Key Stage 2 work by learning two focus facts a week.

In Art/DT this month we have been looing at tone and texture with a focus on the artists Sarah Graham and Nicola McBride. We completed lots of activities whereby we experimented with using different tones and textures in our art work as well as focusing on proportion and composition.

This month in PE we have completed a Gymnastic unit where we learnt about different jumps, roles and balances before putting together our own sequences.

Happy New Year

Attention and Communication

Happy New Year.
We hope you had a lovely Christmas and New year. It is great to be back and continue our focus on language and Communication. By focusing on engaging the children in our group sessions, their  attention to the activities can then extend to other activities. In the pictures you will see two activities 'Fun with Food' and 'Attention Autism'.

Fun with Food is an actiivty to help focus the children using their senses. The activity starts with a transition song:

Its time for fun with food
Its time for fun with food
Look, smell, touch and taste
its time for fun with food

The song helps transition the children into the activity in a fun way. Once seated the children are able to see the food presented and can choose to smell, touch and play. There is no emphasis on tasting the food, althought they are welcome to try some, as the focus is to increase their attention span. For children that struggle with different foods, this can also be a fun way to experience different food without the pressure to taste any of it. A word mat is also produced with symbols and pictures, here words can be introduced to describe the food.

Attention Autism is also an activity that focuses on maintaining the childrens attention. It is set up in 4 different stages:

Stage 1 - to help focus their attention on adult led, fun objects that often spin, wind or make a noise.
Stage 2 - to help sustain their attention also on an adult - led activity.
Stage 3 - where the children learn to shift their attention within a small group as they take turns in a game.
Stage 4 - children are given individual tasks  to complete after a group demonstration, encouraging independence and the ability to transition between activities while maintaining engagement.

Currently we are up to Stage 3 and will soon be introducing Stage 4.

English
We have reached the final parts of our writing unit; independent writing, editing and publishing of their suspense stories. This time, we have trialled a couple of different ways of editing. Year 5/6 have trialled peer-editing, using their marking ladders to study each other's work and make recommendations for improvements to composition, spelling and grammar. The feedback from this has been positive and the children have asked to continue developing this editing format going forward. For some of Year 3/4, we tried a different collaborative approach where a group chose a focus and everyone found examples of this in their own writing and asked peers for support to improve. Again, the children responded positively and are keen to develop this further in our next piece of writing.

Maths
We have started a new approach to fluency with number to support a deeper conceptual understanding of maths. The children have embraced this fully and are enjoying using more efficient methods to calculate and derive facts. Many of them have reported feeling much more confident tackling complex problem solving as they feel their methods are solids.

French and Spelling
In our language lessons, we have been making links to our learning in spelling and etymology. The children have enjoyed finding origins of words and linking this with their learning in spelling about Greek, Latin and Old English base words. In most of our lessons, we discover that spelling words in French is not so alien as many of these are used in English too.

PE
We continue with PE on Mondays and Fridays and attempting outdoor lessons on Friday afternoons. Sadly, this has been scuppered lately with the less than amiable weather, but we will keep trying so please send your child to school wearing sports clothes and water proof coats.

Week Ending Friday 23rd January 2026

Pelynt Primary Academy  |  PreSchool

This week in pre-school the children have completed some lovely activities in relation to showing 'Kindness'.  We made our own kindness trees where we gave affirmations of kindness and powerful statements about each other to show how that person made a positive impact on their friendships.  We also wrote for the children their own ideas of how they are kind. We decorated the trees in lots of colourful hearts, and they made such a beautiful display above our big class kindness tree.

In our creative area the water colour paints have been popular to make special cards, and also to paint some pictures of people who can help us.

This week in our phonics, the focus of our activities was on The Police, we enjoyed sound bingo, sound stories and other phonics games.

The children have really been enthusiastic about using their name mats in the morning to practice their names, and even some of our younger children have shown the beginnings of mark making.  This is a great start in their fine motor development.

Mrs. Butlins' music lesson was enjoyed with reception class; this week we did group songs and nursery rhymes using lots of actions.

Lastly, with an increase in a sickness bug going around the pre-school and school, can I send a polite reminder that it is our policy that it must be 48hours from the last episode of sickness and/or diarrhea before a child returns to pre-school.

This is to eliminate the spread of the bug as soon as possible.

Thank you for your understanding.

The Pre-School Team.

Brunel Primary and Nursery Academy  |  Y4/5 Duckpool

w/e 23.1.26

It has been another packed and purposeful week for our Year 4 and Year 5 children, full of creativity, curiosity and important conversations.

In Geography, the children developed their map skills by locating the world's deserts. They used atlases and maps to identify where deserts are found and began exploring what makes these environments so unique. This learning fed beautifully into our work in English, where the children have been building their grammar knowledge in preparation for writing their own desert diaries. The children have worked hard on sentence structure and detail, getting ready to bring their diary writing to life.

Some of our children were lucky enough to attend an art workshop at the local library, where they took part in creative activities and explored different artistic techniques.

In Science, the children investigated electricity through hands-on learning. They explored complete and incomplete circuits, testing what worked and what did not by using lamps, buzzers and motors. This practical work helped them develop a clear understanding of how circuits function and encouraged lots of problem-solving and teamwork.

We also began our new DT unit, where the children will be designing and making a book cover. They have started thinking about purpose and design, and will be choosing a fastening of their choice as part of their final product.

In French, we began an exciting new unit on habitats, learning new vocabulary and listening carefully to spoken French as we explored different environments.

It has been a busy and engaging week, and we are very proud of the enthusiasm, curiosity and thoughtfulness the children have shown across all areas of learning.

Ballet Dancing Fun

This week has been wet and windy but full of fun.

In English, we finished our Jack and the Beanstalk stories, they are all fantastic. Most of the children said it is the longest and most detailed piece of writing they have ever done. We were all very proud of our work and achievement.

We have continued reading our class story 'No Ballet Shoes in Syria' by Catherine Bruton. The story is getting interesting now and we immersed ourselves into the story by taking part in a ballet workshop. In the story, the character uses ballet as a way of coping with her emotions after fleeing her country and becoming a war refugee. The children found that trying ballet for themselves has helped them to understand the character more deeply.

In art, we have learned about macro photography. The children then had a go using the magnifier app on the IPad to get some photos for themselves. Keep posted to see if any appear on the blog.

Have a restful weekend,

Miss Burton
