We have had an absolutely fantastic week in Class 3, with the highlight being our amazing school trip to Truro Museum on Wednesday to support our learning about Ancient Egypt. The children were brilliantly engaged as we explored pharaohs and the fascinating mummification process. Did you know the Ancient Egyptians believed the brain was useless and that the heart was responsible for who you were and the decisions you made? The children were fascinated by this! Behaviour throughout the trip was excellent, and the children represented the school superbly. We were lucky enough to view real Ancient Egyptian artefacts, including flint tools, amulets (lucky charms) and beautifully decorated pots. We also learned about the many gods the Ancient Egyptians worshipped and discovered just how greedy and expensive their beliefs and rituals could be.
In Science, we carried out an exciting investigation into melting points. We tested gummy bears, white, milk and dark chocolate, cheese, mozzarella and butter. Surprisingly, mozzarella had the highest melting point, while butter melted the fastest!
In Maths, both year groups are moving into our new unit on length and perimeter.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support, and a special thank you for helping get the children into school earlier on Wednesday so we could fully enjoy our day out.
Hello Everyone,
This week in Penhallow, we have been busy testing our knowledge of materials and their properties during our science lesson. We made parachutes from different materials and tested how quickly they reached the ground. We had great fun working collaboratively to make and test our ideas.
In English this week, we have been learning about techniques and devices in poetry, and have written an acrostic poem about clouds. Reception are putting into practice their fast developing skills that they have learnt in phonics, to write labels, captions and sentences, during their English learning.
In maths, Year 2 have been learning about multiplication and division. They have already been given usernames and passwords for 'Times table rock stars' so that they can practice their multiplication tables at home.
Year 1 have been learning about number lines, and have enjoyed making their own number lines from number cards, numicon and other apparatus.
During our history lesson this week, we learnt about the Wright brothers, and how they persevered to invent a flying machine. We found out how their ideas developed and were tested, and how planes have developed over the years. We made our own history timeline of the most significant events in their lives.
From The Penhallow Team

This week in science, we have been learning all about the heliocentric model of the universe. We explored how scientists like Copernicus and Galileo helped us understand that the Sun, rather than the Earth, is at the centre of our solar system, and we discussed how this discovery changed the way people saw the world. In maths, Year 6 have been busy tackling some challenging fraction work: we have been adding fractions with different denominators by finding common multiples, and we have also been practising how to multiply and divide fractions with increasing confidence. In English, we have been improving our sentence writing by using relative clauses to add extra detail, giving our writing more depth and variety. Finally, a huge well done to the Bikeability group for successfully completing their Level 2 training - you showed great perseverance and cycling skills!
Tregantle Class have continued their exciting topic learning on ice and snow, exploring it in lots of creative and hands-on ways. One of the highlights this week has been ice painting. The children used watercolours to paint large blocks of ice, and it was wonderful to watch the colours marble, run and mix as the ice slowly melted. A truly magical experience!
In our maths lessons, we have been focusing on the numbers 6, 7 and 8. Our brilliant mathematicians have been finding lots of different ways to make and represent these numbers, using practical resources and careful thinking to show their understanding.
We also enjoyed a fantastic visit to Saltash Library. We are so lucky to have the library right on our doorstep. The children loved story time with Mrs Orchard and were very excited to choose a new book to take home and enjoy for the week.
Finally, we have been incredibly impressed with Tregantle Class' writing this week. Their phonics skills are really coming together, giving them the confidence and ability to write the words they want to. We are so proud of all their hard work and enthusiasm for learning!
Well done, Tregantle Class - keep up the fantastic learning!

Responding to music
One of our art warm-up activities this week was in response to music. We chose Winter from Vivaldi's Four Seasons and used 2 contrasting coloured pencils tapes together to move our hands and bodies to the music. We thought the above piece of artwork, looking like the eye of a storm, captured the music and weather perfectly!

Exploring watercolour
We have been really enjoying this term's art unit, 'Exploring Watercolour'. We have been inspired by the work of Emma Burleigh and our own resident artist, Mrs Charlesworth. This week, we started with 3 colours and using various techniques such as washing, wet-on-dry and wet-on-wet to make marks on our paper. We then looked closely at our paintings to find hidden images and used more watercolours to add detail.

5 Little Speckled Frogs
This week, reception children have been focusing on the number rhyme, '5 Little Speckled Frogs' in their maths. We have had a lot of fun exploring various activities around this theme, including the above collage showing the blue pool, brown log and 5 speckled frogs.
Class Lantic have had a fantastic week full of curiosity, creativity, and learning across the curriculum.
In computing, we explored some very fun robots and thought about how they work. One of the highlights was learning about a robot chameleon, which could change colours just like a real one! The children loved discussing how technology can copy things we see in nature and had great ideas about what robots might be able to do in the future.
In literacy, we continued our work on the text Lost and Found. The children have been thinking carefully about the characters' feelings and the importance of friendship. They have shared thoughtful ideas, made predictions, and enjoyed retelling parts of the story using lovely language.
Our maths learning has focused on place value to 20. The children have been counting, ordering numbers, and representing them in different ways using tens and ones. They are growing more confident every day and enjoying practical activities to support their understanding.
We also began our new history unit, learning about how toys have changed over time. The children were very excited to compare old toys with modern ones and talk about how materials and designs are different from the past.
Well done, Class Lantic, for another brilliant week of learning!
Mrs Scott, Miss Sleep and Mrs Quick.
