 In the Hotseat..

We have been enjoying using drama to imagine how Michael from Kensuke's Kingdom might have felt about being stranded on a desert island. We learnt how to use open and closed questions while practising our physical oracy skills. This, in turn, led to some fabulous writing across Year 4 and Year 5.

Friendship Designs

We have had a wonderful time this week using Showbie's creative tools to design a piece on 'What Makes A Good Friend' - as part of our PSHE. The children came up with their own vocabulary and images to describe the characteristics of a good friend.

As you can see, each one was beautifully thought through, unique and powerful.

Week ending 05.02

Brunel Primary and Nursery Academy  |  Y2/3 Mousehole

Another fantastic week of learning in Year 2 and 3, full of creativity, teamwork and confidence-building moments. The children have impressed us with their focus and enthusiasm across the curriculum.

English

In English, the children have been developing their writing skills further by learning how to use subordinating conjunctions and rhetorical questions to make their writing more engaging and detailed. They have also been busy planning their own recounts through letters, thinking carefully about audience, purpose and structure. We are seeing real growth in both confidence and independence in their writing.

Maths

In Maths, learning looked a little different across the year groups:

  • Year 2 have been adding two-digit numbers, using a range of practical and written methods.

  • Year 3 have been multiplying and dividing by 3, exploring both sharing and grouping to deepen their understanding.

The children worked hard to explain their thinking and support one another.

History

In History, we learned about the significant figure Amelia Earhart. The children were fascinated by her achievements in flight and enjoyed discussing why she is remembered as an important and inspiring person.

PSHE

Our PSHE lessons focused on thinking about others and challenging ourselves to work collaboratively. The children worked in groups to design a garden for someone with needs different from their own, showing empathy, creativity and excellent teamwork skills.

Design & Technology

DT was a real highlight this week as the children brought their pneumatic toy designs to life. The level of inventiveness, problem-solving and perseverance on display was wonderful to see-every design was unique, and the children were incredibly proud of their finished creations.

PE

In PE, we brought together our whole-class machine dance. The final performance included individual, paired, small-group and whole-class elements, all linked smoothly together. The children showed great coordination, timing and confidence.

Love Yourself Day

On Friday, we celebrated Love Yourself Day. Children and adults were invited to wear things they love, and we spent time talking about self-confidence, kindness and appreciating what makes us all unique. It was a joyful and positive way to end the week.

The Stick House

In our focus story we have been hearing about how each little pig used a different type of material to build their house.

In these pictures the children are exploring the sticks that we found in the garden; they are trying to make a stable building for the pig to live in. We all agreed that it was much harder than it looked.

Week Ending Friday 30th January 2026

Pelynt Primary Academy  |  PreSchool

This week in pre-school we have been exploring our feelings and emotions with the help of The Colour Monster story.  The children have explored how they may feel in different situations with the help of using sentence starters and emotion faces cards to support the recognition of emotions in others.

Children of this age feel lots of emotions and may find it hard to express, interpret, or process these effectively, so as part of their development we often use stories and activities to develop strong emotional skills.  This also helps the children to learn other important things like acceptance, resilience, control, confidence, empathy, and the skill of being able to express how they are feeling.  All important skills to have and to help them build a sense of identity.

With so many emotions to discover, The Colour Monster story has really helped the children to grasp the difference in how they feel, as we know that we don't always just feel one emotion at a time.

In our art this week the children had fun sticking together the parts that make a fire engine.  Some even took it further to draw on the water hose and fire fighter.

With our phonics activities based on doctors and nurses, we used sound stories and sound bingo to discover the different sounds we may hear inside a hospital. We also watched 'Get well soon' with Dr Ranj about what we may visit a doctor for and how we may feel.

Staying on topic of 'Get well soon' - we are aware that there has been a lot of cases of a flu type virus around school and pre-school.  There has been an email out to all parents with guidance from the school about what to do if you are unsure if to send your child in to school or not.  Please do take the time to read this information.

Any questions then please do get in touch with a member of staff.

The Pre-School Team.

End of January

Brunel Primary and Nursery Academy  |  Y6 Treyarnon

Artistic fun!

This week we started our new unit in English based upon our class story 'No Ballet Shoes in Syria' by Catherine Bruton. We have been exploring the character, Aya, and writing different sentences to describe her. We have focused on using parenthesis and experimenting with subordinate and main clauses.

in maths, we have moved onto our unit 'fractions, decimals and percentages'. We have been finding out equivalence and using this to help convert them.

In geography, we explored the factors that might affect birth and death rates. This has helped us understand some reasons why population changes and why some people move countries.

In art, we have been editing photos to design and album cover. We then researched different vinyl designs and had a go at designing our own. We used pastels, watercolours and colouring pencils to see which worked the best. Look at our fabulous sketchbook pages!

Have a fantastic weekend, Miss Burton.

Spring 1 Week 4

St Cleer Primary Academy  |  Year 1/2 L

Straw house

Brunel Primary and Nursery Academy  |  Issys Nursery

This week we have been exploring the properties of straw!

Some of the older children have found that it was really bendy and not very strong; they weren't sure how the first little pig was able to build a house with it, and they weren't surprised that the wolf was able to blow it down.

Other younger children enjoyed playing with it as a sensory experience; watching as it fell and moved with the air (the big bad wolf blowing!).

Copper valley Junior Academy  |  Year 4

January 2026

This month we have been looking at 'How Children's Lives Have Changed' in History. We looked at life for children during the Victorian and Tudor times. We enjoyed learning about how different our lives are compared to that of children in the past. We used a range of different primary and secondary sources to complete our research and practiced evaluating the reliability of our evidence.

In Literacy this month we have been studying the story 'Gregory Cool'. We read the story as a class whilst completing VIPER activities and using our Fab Four characters to investigate the story in more detail. We were focused on the genre 'Stories from another culture' whilst also learning how to create a really effective setting description for a story. We completed lots of SPaG work, particularly focusing on expanded noun phrases, adverbials of place, figurative language and fronted adverbials before eventually planning, writing and editing our very own sequel to the story. We have also studied Kenning poems and created some or our own.

In Maths we completed lots of work on multiplication and division. We spent time using various different written methods to help us complete the given calculations. We also continued our Mastering Number at Key Stage 2 work by learning two focus facts a week.

In Art/DT this month we have been looing at tone and texture with a focus on the artists Sarah Graham and Nicola McBride. We completed lots of activities whereby we experimented with using different tones and textures in our art work as well as focusing on proportion and composition.

This month in PE we have completed a Gymnastic unit where we learnt about different jumps, roles and balances before putting together our own sequences.

Happy New Year

Attention and Communication

Happy New Year.
We hope you had a lovely Christmas and New year. It is great to be back and continue our focus on language and Communication. By focusing on engaging the children in our group sessions, their  attention to the activities can then extend to other activities. In the pictures you will see two activities 'Fun with Food' and 'Attention Autism'.

Fun with Food is an actiivty to help focus the children using their senses. The activity starts with a transition song:

Its time for fun with food
Its time for fun with food
Look, smell, touch and taste
its time for fun with food

The song helps transition the children into the activity in a fun way. Once seated the children are able to see the food presented and can choose to smell, touch and play. There is no emphasis on tasting the food, althought they are welcome to try some, as the focus is to increase their attention span. For children that struggle with different foods, this can also be a fun way to experience different food without the pressure to taste any of it. A word mat is also produced with symbols and pictures, here words can be introduced to describe the food.

Attention Autism is also an activity that focuses on maintaining the childrens attention. It is set up in 4 different stages:

Stage 1 - to help focus their attention on adult led, fun objects that often spin, wind or make a noise.
Stage 2 - to help sustain their attention also on an adult - led activity.
Stage 3 - where the children learn to shift their attention within a small group as they take turns in a game.
Stage 4 - children are given individual tasks  to complete after a group demonstration, encouraging independence and the ability to transition between activities while maintaining engagement.

Currently we are up to Stage 3 and will soon be introducing Stage 4.

English
We have reached the final parts of our writing unit; independent writing, editing and publishing of their suspense stories. This time, we have trialled a couple of different ways of editing. Year 5/6 have trialled peer-editing, using their marking ladders to study each other's work and make recommendations for improvements to composition, spelling and grammar. The feedback from this has been positive and the children have asked to continue developing this editing format going forward. For some of Year 3/4, we tried a different collaborative approach where a group chose a focus and everyone found examples of this in their own writing and asked peers for support to improve. Again, the children responded positively and are keen to develop this further in our next piece of writing.

Maths
We have started a new approach to fluency with number to support a deeper conceptual understanding of maths. The children have embraced this fully and are enjoying using more efficient methods to calculate and derive facts. Many of them have reported feeling much more confident tackling complex problem solving as they feel their methods are solids.

Button 2 (new tab)

French and Spelling
In our language lessons, we have been making links to our learning in spelling and etymology. The children have enjoyed finding origins of words and linking this with their learning in spelling about Greek, Latin and Old English base words. In most of our lessons, we discover that spelling words in French is not so alien as many of these are used in English too.

PE
We continue with PE on Mondays and Fridays and attempting outdoor lessons on Friday afternoons. Sadly, this has been scuppered lately with the less than amiable weather, but we will keep trying so please send your child to school wearing sports clothes and water proof coats.
