Class Blog - March & April 2026
Over the past two months, our class has been busy learning lots of exciting new skills across the curriculum.
In English, we have been focusing on how to write using speech punctuation. We practised using inverted commas, commas, and full stops correctly when writing dialogue. This has helped us to make our stories more interesting and clear for the reader.
In Maths, we explored perimeter and different types of measurement. We learned how to measure in millimetres (mm), centimetres (cm), and metres (m), and we practised converting between these units. We also applied our knowledge to solve problems involving the perimeter of different shapes.
In Science, we investigated light sources and how shadows are made. We discovered that shadows are formed when an object blocks light, and we explored how shadows can change size depending on the position of the light source.
Our Geography lessons took us on an adventure to Antarctica, where we became Antarctic explorers. We learned about this unique and extreme environment and studied the famous explorer Ernest Shackleton and his incredible journey.
In PE, we have been playing handball, where we worked on improving our passing skills and teamwork. We learned how to communicate effectively and support each other during games.
In RE, we learned about Judaism and explored what daily life is like for Jewish people. We discussed traditions, beliefs, and important practices within the religion.
In PSHE, we focused on being healthy and understanding how the food we eat affects our bodies. We talked about making balanced choices and how nutrition helps us grow and stay active.
To finish the term, we went on an exciting trip to Songfest. It was a fantastic collection of songs performed by Asone and directed by Patrick Bailey. We really enjoyed the music and it was a wonderful way to celebrate the end of a busy and successful term.
We are very proud of everything we have achieved and are looking forward to more learning next term!

Over the past week, our class has been hard at work writing up our non-chronological reports inspired by the incredible creatures of Pandora. Using their imagination and carefully chosen vocabulary, pupils have created fantastical species, describing everything from unusual habitats and diets to fascinating adaptations and behaviours.
We have been so impressed with the quality of the writing, and it has been wonderful to see pupils take such pride in refining their work. Some truly fantastic pieces have emerged, and these reports are a real celebration of creativity, detail and descriptive language.
We are excited to be able to share this work with parents soon and would love to invite you in to read through the amazing pieces your children have been writing. Please look out for further details coming shortly about how and when you can join us.
Alongside our writing success, we also enjoyed some brilliant Rock Steady performances this week. Pupils impressed us all with their confidence and enthusiasm, particularly showcasing some amazing guitar playing. The performances were full of energy and talent and were thoroughly enjoyed by everyone watching.
Well done to the whole class for another fantastic week of learning, creativity and performance!
Wow, what a busy March has been!
We kick-started this month celebrating and learning about St David's Day and what it means to the people of Wales. We painted pictures of Daffodils, we had a sensory tray filled with items related to Wales such as leeks, dragons, the Welsh flag, daffodils etc. At snack time we were treated to some Welsh Cakes which were a hit! We watched my 1st Festival on the BBC which educated the children on how children and their families celebrate the day.
We have been very fortunate to be blessed with sunshine we have made the most of it and been outside lots. We have been in the garden and also made use of the field where the children used the climbing and balancing apparatus, played football, went on an insect hunt, enjoyed looking for signs of Spring, raced up and down the hill on the little trikes, rolled down the hill, chased bubbles and used their imaginations to make up lovely role- play games- great fun!
We celebrated St Piran's Day and explored what it means to be Cornish. Mrs Symons got her bake on and taught us how to make Cornish Fairings, which were delicious. The children really enjoyed looking at all of the ingredients, smelling the spices, measuring the ingredients and then rolling the mixture into a ball ready to bake. We then made Cornish flags and listened to and sang Cornish sea shanties.
We had lots of lovely activities in support of World Book Book day. They have included writing and illustrating our own stories. These were absolutely amazing and really showcased how fantastic the children's imagination is. We had stories about dinosaurs, flowers, forests, fairies and everything in between. We played with The Gruffalo puzzle, played The Hungry Caterpillar dominoes, read lots of stories and set up a little sharing library for children to take a book home to enjoy with their grown ups.
We went on a Gruffalo hunt in our wooded area and found the characters from the book, which was lots of fun. Whilst there, we explored, climbed and looked at Spring flowers too. On World Book Day itself the children were invited to come to Nursery dressed as their favourite book character or to bring a favourite book in to share with the group. We had children dressed up as a fairy, Gruffalo, several princesses, a vampire, ninja turtle, a butterfly and an elephant. In the morning we read lots of lovely stories, did Gruffalo Yoga and made collages of Elmer the Elephant. In the afternoon we enjoyed an afternoon tea consisting of scones with cream and jam and cocktail pasties (to continue our learning about St Piran's Day which was the same day as World Book Day).
We have been celebrating our wonderful mummies by making special gifts for Mothering Sunday. The children have planted flowers and we learned how to look after our plants by giving them sunlight and water to help them grow. We made special cards by using a bottom of a plastic bottle to print out flowers patterns, gluing pom-poms in the centre to make a flower. We have been practicing pencil skills by doing amazing mark making, and the children have been telling us why they love their mummies.
Our stories of the week have been " Bluey- My mum is the best" and "Monkey Puzzle". The children have had great fun pushing pipe cleaners through the holes of a colander, this help to build fine motor skills. We have threaded beads and made great colour patterns. We practised great team-building by working together to solve a big puzzle.
During the lovely spring sunshine, the children have had a great time playing outside in the nursery garden, having tea parties, building walls and finding mini beasts.
They have enjoyed making pasta necklaces and bracelets we showed amazing threading skills, patience and determination and using great vocabulary e.g. saying whether theirs is long or short.
We celebrated St Patrick's day, there was a tuff tray showing pictures of all things Irish. For art we did shamrock printing using peppers to get our shamrock shape, we used kitchen roll tubes and dipped them into soapy paint to make a rainbow coming out of a pot of gold. We had a great time doing Irish dancing and we enjoyed the green sparkly gloop outside.
The children have been practicing their cutting skills by cutting out Hey Duggee Red Nose Day bunting. We spent the morning in the school woodland area and field doing a springtime hunt, using clipboards and magnifying glasses. Mrs Trapp brought in some tadpoles from home for us to look at and to look after, we have been enjoying learning about the life cycle of a frog and the nursery rhyme five little speckled frogs. We have been continuing to learn all about Spring and finding out 'What is Spring?' We had great fun painting a giant Tulip and mixing the different shades of colours to give our tulip texture. W We burnt off some energy by going to the hall and having fun on the wiggle bikes. Some of the children went to the library and chose books to take home. In the Nursery gardent he children used their knowledge and understanding moving toy bricks with a tractor and having cups of milk in a cafè. They also showed great friendships, supporting each other when something is too difficult to achieve on your own. Our tadpoles have been growing fast and the children have been keeping an eye on them, trying to spot any with legs!
We have been getting Easter ready by making our lovely Easter cards with a chick popping out of their egg. The children enjoyed designing their own egg pattern by gluing pasta shapes and then painting using pastel colours. On Monday we went down the school woodland area and Mrs Deacon read "We Are Going On a Egg Hunt". The children have been practising their fine motor skills by getting the bugs out through a sticky spider web using tweezers and scissor scoops.
Finally, the children enjoyed an Easter Egg hunt with the reception class, it was so lovely to see all the children working together as a team finding eggs. We have to say a big thank you to View Property for donating the chocolate Easter Eggs.

We have had a lovely last week of term!
All of our SATS practice papers are completed and we have done AMAZINGLY well! We have compiled our Easter Revision timetable, making sure that we factor more time to relax and have fun than study!
In English, our diary entries are complete, just ready for us to edit and improve with fresh eyes next term. The best way to edit any mistakes and improve our writing, we believe. We have completed our unit on area, perimeter and volume in Maths and are whizzing through our arithmetic papers now.
In our WIDER CURRICULUM, we have been investigating the Holocaust as part of our history enquiry and have completed our steady hand games in DT. They look amazing and we are proud of our outcomes.
We were visited by the Easter Bunny today - Isaac had to really search for his name to get his egg!! We finished off the day by a TEAMS chat with Kora. We are delighted that she is coming home today and can't wait to see her back at school after Easter!
That's all from us so HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE!
Miss Randle and Mrs Clary.
Aaaannnndddd... that's a wrap!
What a glorious last week of the term it has been this week. We have had a full week of learning and performances and fun in the sunshine.
In Maths, we completed our unit on Statistics. In Literacy, we wrote and edited the introduction to our setting description. We cannot wait to continue planning and writing the rest of our piece next term. In Computing we continued exploring block coding by looking at how our algorithms look like paper chains. In DT, we finally finished our pouches and spent time decorating and personalising them with Miss Walker. This week, we took time to consolidate our Geography learning by celebrating the amazing world we live in. Please look at the larger photo below for a selection of writing from the children about their own world.
Besides all these learning, we also had a special treat from the amazing Rocksteady bands on Thursday. We finally had the chance to listen to the very talented musicians as they performed the music they have been learning as a band. We rounded off the week with an awesome Easter fun in the sunshine. We started the fun with an Easter animal race, which led to much laughter as the tiny animals seemed to have a mind of their own. Then, we headed out into the forest school for a special Easter Egg hunt which also served as a chance for us to recap some key learning from the term.
A very well done to:

The enormous turnip!
Class 1 had a fantastic trip to the theatre royal where we watched the enormous turnip. One lucky child also got picked to go on stage to pull the rope to help release the turnip! The behaviour from the children was exceptional and we were very proud of them all.

Teddy bear's picnic
To celebrate the children getting 1000 dojos we had a teddy bear's picnic on the field. This was then followed by an easter egg hunt. What a wonderful end to a very full term!

Rocksteady!
We were so proud of all the children who take part in the rocksteady concert. The children performed in front of a large audience and overcame lots of their nerves! We are already looking forward to the summer concert!
As part of our topic this term 'How can the force be with you?', we have been learning all about volcanoes. We explored how they are formed, the different types of volcanoes, what happens when they erupt and the effects this has on people and our planet. In English this week, we have used all of our research and new knowledge and created our own detailed and informative report texts. We worked hard to organise our ideas clearly, using headings and facts to present our information in an engaging way. The final pieces are full of fascinating facts and show how much we have learned about this exciting topic.
In Maths, we have been continuing our work on fractions. The children are really enjoying this topic, and it has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm grow with each lesson. I have been particularly impressed with how well they have understood the concepts, showing confidence when solving problems and explaining their reasoning.
We have now completed our volcano pictures by assembling them with their levers and erupting lava. The children really enjoyed bringing their designs to life and seeing the moving parts in action. We spent time evaluating our finished pieces, thinking about what worked well and what we might improve next time. The children are incredibly proud of their final results.
In PSHE this week, our focus has been on looking after our bodies and the choices we make to keep ourselves healthy. We discussed the importance of a balanced diet, regular exercise, and getting enough rest. The children shared their ideas and reflected on how their everyday choices can help them stay happy and healthy.
A huge congratulations to Iylah and Amelia for being awarded Writers of the Week-what a fantastic achievement! Another well done to Brody and Evie for your amazing efforts in Maths this term. Finally, congratulations to Hector and Esme for the fantastic progress you have made in reading. We are all very proud of you!

Hello Everyone!
On Tuesday this week, Reception walked down to Polperro post office to find out about how the post office works, as part of their learning in English.
They watched customers use the post office for a range of tasks, interviewed the lady behind the counter, posted a letter that they had written to Looe island, and even caught the post lady as we were walking back up the hill, who very kindly showed us how she empties the post box and prepares it for the next set of letters.
Thank you to the lovely lady in the post office, who said we were all extremely well behaved, and thank you to Eliza's family who let us sit outside their cafe for a drink before returning to school. The post office role play area in the classroom has been very busy since Tuesday and the children have enjoyed handling money, reading maps, sorting mail and writing letters.
As you can see from the picture, Penhallow have also been enjoying using our brand new PE equipment for our gymnastics lessons this week. We were very impressed with a number of children who demonstrated determination by trying several times to attempt manoeuvres, before achieving success. The children became more resilient and brave as the lesson progressed, and showed excellent team work skills. Well done everyone! We love our new equipment too.
Have a lovely weekend!
